Types of Creativity

Creativity is the ability to create or invent. While it’s often said that this skill is inherent in only a few, the truth is that creativity is an innate ability of all humans. It has enabled humanity to survive over the years and is evident in our constant invention of tools to overcome physical or mental limitations.

According to Jeff DeGraff, an innovative professor at the Ross School of Business, everyone is creative, but in different ways. He categorizes creativity into five types. What are they?

1. Mimetic Creativity

This type involves applying an existing idea to a different field to generate new knowledge that suits the current market. Mimetic creatives draw inspiration from history and focus on learning from the mistakes of others.

2. Bisociative Creativity

This creativity stems from the ability to develop projects based on brainstorming. People with bisociative creativity believe that the more ideas they generate, the better the chances of finding effective solutions. They also value working in a relaxed, stress-free environment to allow ideas to flow naturally. These creatives strive to balance rationality and emotion.

3. Narrative Creativity

This type focuses on creating characters, actions, and plots through detailed descriptions to tell a story. It could be an original narrative or a reconstruction with alternate versions. Narrative creatives excel at descriptions and are especially effective in helping others, particularly children, understand concepts through storytelling.

4. Analogical Creativity

This involves connecting unrelated things to solve unfamiliar problems. Analogical creatives often use rhetorical figures like comparisons and metaphors to bridge gaps and find innovative solutions.

5. Intuitive Creativity

This is the peak of creativity, where ideas emerge in the mind without external input. Intuitive creatives often find inspiration by allowing their imagination to run free. They feel the need to relax or distract themselves to unleash their most productive thoughts.

Why Is Creativity Important?

As mentioned earlier, creativity drives innovation and has enabled humanity to thrive by turning disadvantages into advantages. Creativity allows us to view everything around us as something that can be changed or improved.

In the business world, creativity is a game-changer. It helps businesses overcome challenges, innovate, and stand out in competitive markets. Creativity transforms obstacles into opportunities for growth and improvement.
